Tyler Public Library wraps up summer reading activities

by Heather Newman - July 23, 2008

The Summer Reading Club Jubilee at Tyler Public Library is drawing to a close July 21 – 25. The final week of special activities for children and adults includes famous book characters, blockbuster movies and a wrap-up party spotlighting City of Tyler departments. All activities are free and open to the public at 201 S College in downtown Tyler.

Fables & Films” for preschoolers, Monday through Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m., features the beloved children’s book character Curious George with books, stories, and a short film, “Curious George takes a Vacation.”

Julie Andrews stars in two movies this week. On Monday and Tuesday at 1:30, she brings Mary Poppins to life. On Thursday evening at 6 p.m. Andrews shines as Maria Von Trapp in the classic movie musical, The Sound of Music.

For the final “Fab Friday” City of Tyler staff from various departments join their Library colleagues to throw a Reading Club Wrap-up party. Personnel from the Police, Fire, Solid Waste and Streets Departments will bring their cruisers, fire engines, garbage trucks and street sweepers to the Library parking lot from 1:30 – 4 p.m. for tours by the public. The Tyler Public Library Bookmobile will also be on hand. Games and crafts will be underway all afternoon on the Library Patio and in the Taylor Auditorium.

All week long the Library will host a Scholastic Book Fair in the Lobby. Books for all ages will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the Book Fair will help the Library add to its permanent collection. Book Fair hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

As part of its mission to encourage people of every age to become life-long readers, the Library participates in the Texas State Library’s Summer Reading Program—this year celebrating 50 years of Texas Reading Clubs.  Using time logs provided by the Library, children, teens and adults track the hours they spend reading in June and July. After logging 15 hours, readers turn in completed time logs to the Library Information Desk and pick a free book from the “Jubilee” book cart.  Children who are not reading independently may still participate by being read to for 15 hours.

All summer programs take place in Taylor Auditorium at the Tyler Public Library, 201 S. College in downtown Tyler. All events are free and open to the public. Summer Reading Club programs are made possible through the Friends of the Tyler Public Library, with additional support from Target Distribution Center-Tyler. For more information, call the Library at (903) 593-7323 or check out the Summer Reading Club Jubilee page online at www.tylerlibrary.com.
