Tyler Public Library year-round “Book Nook”

by Heather Newman - November 20, 2009

Affordable gift-giving ideas are right around the corner at the Tyler Public Library. The Library’s Book Nook offers new and gently-read books at a fraction of the retail price, just in time for the holidays.

“We sell adult and children’s’ fiction and non-fiction books, even audio books,” said Evelyn McLane, Library programming associate, who oversees the year-round sales area. “Most items are priced under $5.”

Items for sale include donations, which do not meet the Library’s current needs and “weeded” resources that have been withdrawn from Library circulation. Library staff and volunteers sort and prepare sale items throughout the year and keep the Book Nook stocked with fresh items daily.

“You just never know what treasures may be on our shelves from day to day,” says McLane. “Shopping at the Library is a great way to make your dollar go farther. And the wonderful thing is, all proceeds from our sales go directly toward the purchase of new or replacement items for the Library’s collection. So you’re supporting the mission of the Library while you shop.”

The Book Nook is open during regular Library hours, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon – 4 p.m. on Sundays. Books may be purchased with cash or checks; no credit or debit cards are accepted.

The Library’s annual Spring Book Sale, where thousands of items are offered for sale, is set for March 12 and 13, 2010.

Tyler Public Library is located at 201 S College in downtown Tyler. For more information about the sale, call (903) 593-7323 or email programs@tylertexas.com.

The Tyler Public Library houses more than 200,000 items and has almost 20,000 cardholders. Nearly 58,000 people visited the Library from January to March of 2009, and more than 60,000 items were circulated. In addition, two dozen Internet access workstations are in constant use seven days a week.
