The City of Tyler held an open house to gather citizen input about portions of the City sign ordinance on Nov. 19 from 3-7 p.m. at the Tyler Public Library, located at 201 S. College.
This come and go public involvement meeting had no formal presentation; however City staff was available to answer questions about the ordinance. Citizens may still submit their input on a questionnaire that is available online at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/?p=WEB229VUQVH8KL.
“The Ordinance has been part of the City Code for many years,” commented Mayor Barbara Bass. “However, because of feedback received as part of the Tyler 21 planning process, the ordinance was updated and a concentrated enforcement effort was launched in early 2008. Since it has been more than a year since the ordinance has been updated and concentrated enforcement has begun, we are taking this time to gather input from the community to determine if additional changes should be made to the ordinance.”
The intent of the ordinance is to preserve the beauty and unique character of the community and to ensure signs are maintained and placed appropriately for the public welfare.
General input about the ordinance will be taken; however, the primary areas that will be focused upon are the regulations regarding temporary banners as well as holiday decorations.
Currently, the ordinance allows a business to display up to two temporary banners at a given time. These temporary banners must be permitted through the City’s Planning and Zoning Department and each business may draw a permit twice per year. These regulations are designed to limit visual clutter in the community.
“Striking a balance between preserving the visual appearance of our community and supporting local businesses is a challenge,” continued Mayor Bass. “This process will help us determine if the current ordinance has achieved that balance.”
