Printed Page Players 1st Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. in Taylor Auditorium
Reading classic plays aloud!
September 4 The Circle (1921) by W. Somerset Maugham
Thirty years ago, Lady Kitty gave up a stuffy life with her titled husband to run away with a young adventurer. Now, on a visit to her grown son, she sees her daughter-in-law entangled in a similar affair. To make matters worse, who should arrive for the party but Lady Kitty’s long-abandoned husband., The play blends humor and wit with a dig at the conflicts inherent in modern society as the abandoned and reunited get to know one another once again.
October 2 Hay Fever (1925) by Noel Coward
Inspired by a weekend he spent at a famous actor's house, Coward wrote this play in three days. The Bliss family is filled with actors, artists and writers. No one is ordinary; everyone has a great talent, or at least they believe they have a great talent. Without telling anyone, each member of the Bliss family has invited a guest to spend the weekend at their palatial home. As the guests arrive, everything goes haywire.

Rene Saldana, Jr. - Author Visit Thursday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m. in Taylor Auditorium
Rene Saldana, Jr., award-winning Latino author of Jumping Tree, Finding Our Way: Stories and Whole Sky Full of Stars visits the Library. Saldana will read from his books and discuss Latino Literature in Texas. There will be a reception following the presentation.
Dr. Saldana’s visit is made possible through the Texas Center for the Book.
Dr. Saldana is Assistant Professor of Language and Literacy at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Several of his stories have appeared in anthologies such as Face Relations, Guys Write for GUYS READ, Every Man for Himself, and Make Me Over, and in magazines such as Boy’s Life and READ.
Saldana is especially interested in the use of culturally relevant literature to promote literacy. “I feel that if reluctant and non-readers are shown literature that validates them and their culture in respectful and accurate ways, they will be more encouraged to take a more active role in their own literacy educations.
Currently, Saldana is putting the finishing touches on an anthology of stories for young adults about how young people cope when they are faced with Alzheimer’s sufferers. He is also continuing to work on his next young adult novel and is compiling a second short story collection for young adults. Read more about Saldana at his blog www.renesaldanajr.blogspot.com.
