August 31 - The Piano Teacher by Janice Y.K. Lee
Will Truesdale, a rootless, handsome Briton, arrives in Hong Kong in 1941, and is swept up by Trudy Liang, the blithe and glamorous daughter of a Shanghai millionaire and a Portuguese beauty. They quickly become inseparable, their days spent in a whirl of parties and champagne, but when the Japanese invade, Will is interned and Trudy resorts to increasingly Faustian methods to survive. After the war, Claire Pendleton, the native wife of a British civil servant, arrives. She begins giving piano lessons to the daughter of a rich Chinese couple, and falls in love with their wounded and inscrutable driver: Will. Lee unfolds each story, and flits between them, with the brisk grace and discretion of the society she describes a world in which horrors are adumbrated but seldom told.

East Texas Genealogical Society and Tyler Public Library Sponsor Roots 101 Workshops
Beginning genealogists can get a few pointers from experienced researchers in August with a series of workshops sponsored by the East Texas Genealogical Society (ETGS) and the Tyler Public Library. Roots 101: Beginning Genealogy (Research for Rookies) will introduce the basics of family research each Saturday in August from 1-4 p.m. in the Tyler Public Library’s Taylor Auditorium
“The sessions are designed to introduce ‘rookie’ researchers to the basic concepts of family research,” said Evelyn McLane, Library Programming Associate. The course will help answer questions about getting started, organizing files, completing pedigree charts, and accessing Internet resources.
Beginning Aug. 7 with “The Basics”, Jim Sellers will introduce participants to pedigree charts, group sheets, census records and more. Jeanne Sellers will follow up with an introduction to Internet search engines and basic Internet searches.
On Aug. 14, during “The People”, attendees will be invited to meet with ETGS members for their monthly gathering to include a discussion by Aaron Holt about the National Archives and Records Administration, Southwest Region, in Fort Worth.
As the sessions continue on Aug. 21 with “The Resources”, the group will tour the Local and Family History section of the Tyler Public Library and begin computer research assisted by ETGS members.
At the last session on Aug. 28, “The Sources”, Frances Grochoski and Scott Fitzgerald will lead a discussion of various sources for genealogical information, including court house records, land records and church records.
The free workshops are open to anyone interested in starting family research. The public is welcome, but registration is required and is limited to 40 participants. For more information about the workshops or to register, go to the Library registration form or www.etgs.org. Participants can also register by phone: (903) 593-7323 or email: programs@tylertexas.com.
