About CodeRED

The Tyler City Council in February 2007 unanimously approved a contract that would allow the City of Tyler to notify citizens of emergency situations like child abductions or water main breaks at a moment’s notice.

The CodeRED Emergency Telephone Calling System is an extremely high-speed telephone communication service available for emergency notifications. CodeRED employs a one-of-a-kind Internet mapping capability for geographically targeting calls, coupled with a high-speed telephone calling system capable of delivering customized pre-recorded emergency messages directly to homes and businesses at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour.

“What this means is we can record a message and deploy that message to just the affected area or the entire City depending upon the situation,” Fire Chief Neal Franklin said. “This system has been used successfully across the country and we are excited to add this valuable tool as a service to our citizens.”

The City of Tyler has chosen a two-tier system with Level I for emergencies and Level II for non-emergencies.

Level I emergencies may include the following:

  • Severe Weather
  • Terrorism Related Emergencies
  • HAZMAT Emergencies
  • Drinking Water Contamination
  • Amber Alerts

Level II non-emergency incidents may include the following:

  • Extended Utility Outages
  • Major Water or Sewer Breaks
  • Delayed Trash Pick-Up
  • Road Closures
