Historic Preservation Strategic Plan Approved by City Council
July 26
The Tyler 1st Comprehensive Plan’s Historic Preservation chapter identifies the facilitation and adoption of a Strategic Plan for Historic Preservation as a one of the goals. The Historic Preservation Strategic Plan is a supplemental policy document to Chapter 6 of the Tyler 1st Comprehensive Plan and implements the action plan for Historic Preservation.
In 2016, the City of Tyler was awarded a matching grant from the Texas Historical Commission to conduct a Historic Preservation Strategic Plan. The Lakota Group was hired to formulate and identify specific, realistic and achievable strategies for enhancing the City’s current historic preservation program and initiatives.
A steering committee of local stakeholders was formed and met from July to January to determine the plan’s direction. Two community workshops and multiple Historical Preservation Board review sessions were held to refine the plan.
The plan provides educational and economic development opportunities using historical preservation as a tool. By completing this project other goals identified in the Tyler 1st Comprehensive Plan’s Historic Preservation Chapter will be addressed including:
- Promote and display diverse aspects of Tyler’s history to enhance resident and visitor awareness of its importance
- Enhance public awareness of the economic benefits of historic preservation in Tyler
- Enhance Historic Preservation involvement
