Our next Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) will be announced soon. BPOC cadets must be FULL-TIME employees of a sponsoring agency (no independents). Contact the TPD Training Unit for registration details & deadlines. BPOC tuition is $1,500 per cadet.
The Basic Peace Officer Course consists of 23 to 24 weeks of classroom and “hands on” training. We use various training techniques, including theoretical knowledge lecture courses, practical skills training, and scenario-based training to enhance the cadet’s learning experience. Classroom training includes topics such as criminal justice, criminal investigation, basic law, police procedures, general wellness, first-responder medical, and traffic control. Cadets are trained and tested in proficiency areas like physical fitness, de-escalation techniques, SFST’s, defensive tactics, driving, and firearms. BPOC instruction is held at various Tyler Police Department facilities. Working hours are generally from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm (Monday through Friday) with some evening and night training required.
The BPOC training is mentally and physically challenging but is designed to provide the cadet with fundamentals necessary to become a professional police officer for their agency. BPOC curriculum will provide each cadet with the education required to take and pass the Basic Peace Officer exam to be licensed as a peace officer in the State of Texas.
BPOC cadets must be full-time employees of a sponsoring agency (no independent cadets are being accepted at this time). Tyler PD recruits have initial priority and will be paid their full salary while attending the BPOC. Secondary priority will be given to local agencies, based on available openings. There is no residency requirement - cadets and/or their agencies will be responsible for housing and transportation.
