Cancer Awareness

Why Tyler Fire Fighters "Wear Pink"

Pink-Shirted Golfers

In 2008, one of our brother fire fighters was told that his wife’s cancer had metastasized. This young mother had been in remission for two years after initially being diagnosed while pregnant with their first child. The Tyler Professional Fire fighters Association began discussing what could be done to help this young family. We then met with our administration and requested being allowed to wear pink uniform shirts on-duty for three days, and to sell them to the public to raise funds for this family.

The following year Tyler Fire Fighters decided to continue our efforts to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer by wearing and selling pink shirts. Each October we host a cancer awareness event in Downtown Tyler called “Turn Tyler Pink”, partnering with many local cancer organizations, local schools and businesses to show women that we care enough to wear pink. We then donate the funds raised to several local cancer organizations including: Susan G. Komen For The Cure/Tyler, Smith County American Cancer Society, and the newly formed Tyler fire Fighters C.A.R.E. (Cancer Awareness & Relief Effort) fund. The CARE fund has been established to help any of our fire fighters or their defendants diagnosed with cancer. Each year our CARE committee designs new shirts and a cap to wear and sell. We ask everyone to join Tyler fire fighters by donning pink to show everyone that Tyler “Cares Enough To Wear Pink” in support of those fighting this terrible battle.

The keys to our success have been:

  1. Wearing Pink: Remember this program began as an effort to help a young mother in her battle with cancer.
  2. Creating CARE: Our fire fighters have embraced the idea of being able to decide where the donations are needed locally and being able to help out our own.
  3. Involving the Community: We are meeting with local businesses, schools, and politicians to open a dialog to discuss our efforts to fight cancer. We are also becoming involved with local cancer organizations in their fund raising events.

Combat Challenge

Silver Winners

Brookshires/Scott Firefighters Combat Challenge October 12-13, 2012

Tyler Fire Department Over 40 Relay Team came with skill, agility, sacrifice, and pure determination. The only Tyler Fire Department team to place in the challenge did so against all odds, overcoming injuries resulting in one man short in the final go. This win entitles the over 40 team to compete in the World Finals in North Carolina but have chosen to opt out this year due to sustained injuries from one of their team members.

Tyler Fire Over 40 went up against Austin Velocity (Austin Fire Department) and won the first round. In the final round TFD went against Team Dr. Pepper (Altus, OK), running one member short, and finished 2nd.

Tyler Area MP Open House for Transportation Improvement Program update

  • Date: 10/24/2023 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

The Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is hosting an open house for community members about the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) update on Tuesday, Oct. 24, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Tyler Development Center's large conference room at 423 W. Ferguson St.

During the open house, the community will learn about changes to the amount of Federal funding spent on widening FM 2493 (Old Jacksonville Hwy) to six lanes from Loop 323 to FM 2813. The total project cost is not changing, only the percentage of State versus Federal funding to pay for the project.

The TIP is a short-range budgeting document that provides details on how federal transportation funding dollars will be spent on planning, design and construction of highway and transit improvements over the next four fiscal years. Information about the TIP is also accessible on the MPO website: www.tylerareampo.org.

Staff from the Tyler Area Metropolitan Planning Organization will be on hand to answer questions and provide information regarding the amendment.

Questions and comments can be submitted through the Contact Us page under the About section of the MPO’s website or by emailing the MPO at mpo@tylertexas.com. Comments received will be presented to the MPO’s Transportation Policy Committee when the proposed amendment is considered for adoption on Thursday, Nov. 16.
