Assistant Chief Michael Frost began his professional fire service career in 1996. Chief Frost is responsible for overseeing and managing the Department's budget and administrative duties and acting as head of the Department when required. He also serves as the Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator in times of disaster or other emergencies. He has progressed through the ranks of Fire Fighter, Engineer, Captain, and Battalion Chief and was promoted to Assistant Chief on February 12, 2017.
Having spent the last 28 years in the fire service, he holds certifications as a Master Firefighter, Fire Officer IV, and Instructor II through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He holds the Advanced Professional Series (APS) certification from FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute in Emergency Management and All Hazards Incident Management Certificate, Texas A&M. He is a Registered Nurse, TBN, and a certified EMT-Basic, TDH. Other certifications include Vehicle Rescue Technician Level I-III, Confine Space Technician, Trench Rescue Technician Level III, NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Technician, and Rope Rescue Technician. He also served as a Tyler Junior College instructor and was the Kilgore College Fire Academy Salutatorian in 1996.
Before joining the Tyler Fire Department, Chief Frost served our country in the U.S. Air Force as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (EOD). Chief Frost is a graduate of the National Fire Academy, Emmetsburg, Maryland, and the Texas Fire Chiefs Academy, earning the Chief Fire Executive designation.
He is a member of the Texas Fire Chief's Association and the International Fire Chiefs Association. He holds a degree in Nursing TBN, an AAS degree in Fire Administration and is currently completing a BAS in Emergency Management. Frost holds a position with the Regional Advisory Council (RAC-G) finance committee with the and is the Smith County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) co-chair.
He is a 2015 City of Tyler Leadership Academy graduate and Leadership Tyler, Class of #31-2018. He has one daughter that graduated from the University of Houston and earned her M.D. from St. George's University School of Medicine specializing in emergency medical care.
