  • Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

    A permit is required for installing a retaining wall, and if the retaining wall is over four feet in height it requires engineered plans, signed and sealed by a registered engineer.
  • Do I need a permit for an electrical repair?

    Yes, in the event that a residence or a commercial business experiences an electrical disruption after-hours, on a holiday or weekend, then a professional registered electrician can perform the necessary repairs and request a reconnect from Oncor Electric so they can restore services to the family or business promptly. The electrical contractor needs to obtain an electrical permit so we can perform the necessary inspections at that location.
  • Do I need a permit for clearing or taking down trees?

    Dead or diseased trees may be taken down without a permit. General clearing of trees requires a grading permit through the Permit Center.
  • Do I need a permit for installing a fence?

    A permit is not required for installation of a fence. Please refer to the City of Tyler Code of Ordinances, Chapter 10, Article VI, Division C, for further information about 'Fences and Walls.'
  • Do I need a permit for repairing my driveway approach or sidewalk?

    Repair for a sidewalk does not require a permit, but repair of a driveway approach does require a permit. Both require inspections. 
  • Do I need a permit to replace siding, shingles, sheetrock, doors or windows?

    Replacing siding and intermittent shingles is considered cosmetic work and does not require a permit. Replacing a roof does require a permit. If you are just replacing doors a permit is not required, but if you are adding them where they haven't been before you will need a permit. Replacing sheetrock does, and more important, the replacing of windows does require a permit because the replacement windows will need to meet the city and state energy code requirements.

  • How long will it take to get a building permit approved?

    Commercial plans should take no more than 10 working days for approval, provided that the plans submitted contain all of the necessary information required. Residential new construction approval usually takes no more than 5 working days.
  • Is construction activity limited to specific hours?

    The City of Tyler Code of Ordinances prohibits construction in close proximity to a residential area or hotel between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays and the hours of 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekends. By City Code of Ordinances Section 4-90.

  • When does a building permit expire?

    Building permits are good for six months from date of issuance. This period of time may be extended if you have been continuously working on the building and calling for the proper inspections when needed.
